After nearly two years, the D1NZ National Drifting Championship returned to Pukekohe Park Raceway.  The weekend of the 11th & 12th saw New Zealands top drifters come out to what I consider as the birthplace of competitive drifting in New Zealand. This was the first track I went to after I moved here from California, and although it may not be the best presented or highest budget track, there is just something about Pukekohe that seems special to me.

A new addition to the Hamilton400 this year, is the introduction of drifting demonstrations.  This has been arranged by D1NZ, and we will have the Nankang Tyres Mazda RX7 out on the track throughout the weekend along with 7 other top New Zealand drifters.

Round4 saw the D1NZ National Drifting Championship head to Taupo Motorsport Park, one of the best setup tracks in New Zealand.  For the first time in years, we were drifting in summer conditions with high track temperatures and the sun out in full force.  To mix things up and add a whole new challenge, D1 decided to run the judged section through the infield track, and in REVERSE.  With only a small handful of competitors ever having run this track before in reverse, it would mean a fair playing field for most.

I attended a DriftMotorsport NZ day the previous weekend, but my tracktime ended early when my differential decided to let go on the first session out.  With no replacement, it meant that I was on the trailer and luckily had a spare at home that I would install for D1 the following weekend.

Last weekend was round4 of the D1NZ National Drifting Championship at Taupo.  We had the RX7 back out in full force thanks to Eastern Automotive putting together a brand new LS6 motor for it and Nankang Tyres for making it all possible.

The car was driving brilliantly and I qualified in 3rd place on the reverse track layout.  Was a great weekend, and I will have a full event report up in the next few days.
